People with Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia are at increased risk for abuse and neglect in institutional settings such as nursing homes. Because they are unable to remember recent events and/or communicate them to others, they are easy targets for emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

What Are the Risks?
Any nursing home resident may be subject to negligent care or deliberate abuse, but people with Alzheimer's may be at greater risk. An Alzheimer's patient's memory problems, emotional outbursts and occasional violent behavior can put so much stress on caregivers that they react violently. Or, caregivers may intentionally take advantage of the patient's impaired mental abilities.
The result may be physical, sexual or emotional abuse of the patient. In some cases, caregivers provide negligent care, including not feeding or medicating patients properly, not bathing them often enough, improperly restraining them and failing to prevent wandering off.
In addition to physical abuse in Alzheimer's patients, you may see signs of emotional trauma, which may include:
- Crying
- Withdrawing from social interaction
- Fearful behavior
- Refusing to eat
- Difficulty sleeping
If you suspect abuse, report it immediately and contact an attorney.
