How Do Bedsores Happen?
Bedsores are a common problem at many nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Causes can include:
Also called lesions, pressure point sores and decubitus ulcers, bedsores occur when bedridden or wheelchair-bound patients are left in one position for long periods. The continual pressure causes poor circulation, which can lead to skin and tissue breaking down on the hips, buttocks, lower back, calves, heels and the undersides of arms.
Bedsores begin as a skin irritation with redness and loss of skin layers. If the sores are allowed to fester, additional layers of skin may be lost, and tissue will be exposed. In the most serious cases, the tissue also wears away, leaving muscle or bone exposed.
Left untreated, bedsores can cause extreme pain, tissue damage and serious secondary conditions such as infection, especially if substandard care leads to contact with moisture, urine or feces. Infection can lead to catastrophic injuries, including sepsis, gangrene, amputation or wrongful death.
