Complications of Broken Hips
Elderly people are especially susceptible to broken bones. A broken hip requires major surgery and rehabilitation, and can cause permanent disability in older patients. In addition, the period of inactivity following the surgery can lead to problems such as pneumonia and malnutrition. Long hospital stays can also cause infections, depression and muscle weakness. In some cases, the broken hip does not heal, which may require additional surgery.
The complications associated with breaking a hip can be catastrophic. A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reports that approximately 20 percent of patients with broken hips die within a year of the injury.
How Does It Happen?
The overwhelming majority of broken hips in people 65 and over are caused by falls. In nursing homes, falls can be the result of negligence such as:
- Falling out of bed
- Lack of bedrails
- Staff drops a resident while trying to lift him or her
- Slipping in the bathroom
- Lack of supervision
- Inadequate staffing
- Medication error
- Nurse or physician negligence
