The Dangers of Dehydration
Our bodies simply cannot function without adequate water. Even mild dehydration can be dangerous, especially to the elderly. Those who experience dehydration are at increased risk for bedsores, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and confusion. Lack of fluids can also cause electrolyte imbalances which can lead to seizures.
Reduced blood flow is another complication of dehydration. This can cause hypovolemic shock, organ malfunction and coma. In the worst cases, wrongful death may occur.
There are numerous causes of dehydration in nursing homes such as:
- Illnesses such as fever, infection, diabetes or diarrhea
- Excessive sweating or vomiting
- Forgetting to drink
- Medication side effects
- Decreased kidney function
- Decreased thirst sensation
- Exposure to excessive heat
Negligence by the facility or staff is the underlying cause of these problems. Patients are supposed to be adequately monitored, so dehydration does not occur. If prevention fails, treatment should be given immediately, but too often, dehydration goes unnoticed.
